Enjoy the space under your deck.
Posted By Craig on June 2, 2010
Many homeowners have decks with a large space under them. They cannot use the space very well because water drips through the deck down onto the surface below. You can utilize the space under your deck, giving you more area to enjoy the outdoors. Their are several ways to capture the water and divert it from falling on your head under your deck. There are three main methods to make your deck waterproof.
The first way is to install a surface on your deck top that is waterproof and lets the water run off the end of the deck. This method requires replacing your deck boards with a solid surface. you will not have the look of deck boards any more but will have a smooth surface. This type of product can be made out of cement, rubber or vinyl. There are many patterns that can be used for the deck surface, giving you the look of tile, stone or cement. This method can be expensive as you have to replace the deck boards with plywood and then put the waterproofing over it. It tends to work better for new decks.
The second method of catching the water is using a plastic or rubber material draped between the deck joists. This catches the water after it has dripped between the deck boards and diverting it to the outside of the deck. This method is the most durable and can be used on new decks or an existing one. From the underside of the deck you will see the rubber material draped in each bay between the deck joists. You can put a ceiling on the underside of the deck to cover up this material. Some of these products such as Dek Drain have life time warranties. This type of product works very well but some decks have obstruction between the joists that limit its use. The water flows to a gutter at the outside of the deck.
The third method of collecting the water, catches the water on the ceiling of the underside of the deck. The material is either vinyl or aluminum and covers the underside of the deck giving you a clean look. It will look very similar to the aluminum soffit on your roof. It can be used on almost any deck and comes in a variety of colors. It can be the easiest to install and the cheapest. Care has to be used when installing it so that it is strong and will hold the weight of the water on top of it. The water flows to the end of the deck and a gutter catches it.
Which ever method you use, they will give you more space outside. The dry space means you can have furniture or a hot tub under your deck. You can even turn the space into a sun room. Having more usable space outside will add value to your home and open up more ways to enjoy your deck. Deck water proofing can be complicated to install so an experience installer is recommended.

I think under decking works best in the majority of deck situations you run into. It allows you to easily choose what color of ceiling you want, works with light fixtures and ceiling fans, and even makes the ceiling of the first floor deck look improved. The other options also work but aesthetically I think underdecking looks the best.
